I had the honor of helping one of my best friends propose to his boyfriend (one of my other best friends) recently! I snuck into their house the day of the engagement to decorate as a surprise to the happy couple when they returned from their mountain hike engagement.
I wanted to go with a romantic look for the evening and decided on white flowers with candles as the main color scheme for the evening. With the sun setting earlier now, I knew the candles would create the romantic atmosphere I was looking for. I used tea lights so they would be low and could be placed in between the flowers.
There was a small group of friends there for the return surprise, so I created a charcuterie spread and had chilled champagne ready to toast the happy couple! I went with two bottles Veuve Clicquot to make sure there was enough for two rounds of cheersing.
A great place to find candles is IKEA. They offer a wide variety of colors at very reasonable prices. They also have a lot of glassware that is very affordable to put tea lights in. Another great find at IKEA was using their basic drinkware for the flowers. The glasses come in sets of 6 for less than $5 each. For flowers, I got a majority of them at Costco and the rest from Trader Joe’s.
The setup took about 3-4 hours with the help of other family members of the engaged couple. I wanted to be done a little early so there was plenty of time to shower and change, get the charcuterie board prepared, set up the camera to video the happy couple’s face when the walked in the door, and light all of the candles!
It was such a wonderful evening getting to celebrate the love between two amazing people!
